C# Interview Questions and Answers
C# Interview Questions and Answers
1)What's C# ?
C# (pronounced C-sharp) is a new object oriented language from Microsoft and is derived from C and C++. It also borrows a lot of concepts from Java too including garbage collection.
2)Is it possible to inline assembly or IL in C# code?
- No.
3)Is it possible to have different access modifiers on the get/set methods of a property?
- No. The access modifier on a property applies to both its get and set accessors. What you need to do if you want them to be different is make the property read-only (by only providing a get accessor) and create a private/internal set method that is separate from the property.
4)Is it possible to have a static indexer in C#? allowed in C#.
- No. Static indexers are not
5)If I return out of a try/finally in C#, does the code in the finally-clause run?
-Yes. The code in the finally always runs. If you return out of the try block, or even if you do a goto out of the try, the finally block always runs:
using System;
class main
{
public static void Main()
{
try
{
Console.WriteLine(\"In Try block\");
return;
}
finally
{
Console.WriteLine(\"In Finally block\");
}
}
}
Both In Try block and In Finally block will be displayed. Whether the return is in the try block or after the try-finally block, performance is not affected either way. The compiler treats it as if the return were outside the try block anyway. If it’s a return without an expression (as it is above), the IL emitted is identical whether the return is inside or outside of the try. If the return has an expression, there’s an extra store/load of the value of the expression (since it has to be computed within the try block).
6)I was trying to use an out int parameter in one of my functions. How should I declare the variable that I am passing to it?
You should declare the variable as an int, but when you pass it in you must specify it as ‘out’, like the following: int i; foo(out i); where foo is declared as follows:
[return-type] foo(out int o) { }
7)How does one compare strings in C#?
In the past, you had to call .ToString() on the strings when using the == or != operators to compare the strings’ values. That will still work, but the C# compiler now automatically compares the values instead of the references when the == or != operators are used on string types. If you actually do want to compare references, it can be done as follows: if ((object) str1 == (object) str2) { } Here’s an example showing how string compares work:
using System;
public class StringTest
{
public static void Main(string[] args)
{
Object nullObj = null; Object realObj = new StringTest();

8)How do you specify a custom attribute for the entire assembly (rather than for a class)?
Global attributes must appear after any top-level using clauses and before the first type or namespace declarations. An example of this is as follows:
using System;
[assembly : MyAttributeClass] class X {}
Note that in an IDE-created project, by convention, these attributes are placed in AssemblyInfo.cs.
If you return out of the try block, or even if you do a goto out of the try, the finally block always runs:
using System;
class main
{
public static void Main()
{
try
{
Console.WriteLine(\"In Try block\");
return;
}
finally
{
Console.WriteLine(\"In Finally block\");
}
}
}
[return-type] foo(out int o) { }
7)How does one compare strings in C#?
In the past, you had to call .ToString() on the strings when using the == or != operators to compare the strings’ values. That will still work, but the C# compiler now automatically compares the values instead of the references when the == or != operators are used on string types. If you actually do want to compare references, it can be done as follows: if ((object) str1 == (object) str2) { } Here’s an example showing how string compares work:
using System;
public class StringTest
{
public static void Main(string[] args)
{
Object nullObj = null; Object realObj = new StringTest();
int i = 10;
Console.WriteLine(\"Null Object is [\" + nullObj + \"]\n\"
+ \"Real Object is [\" + realObj + \"]\n\"
+ \"i is [\" + i + \"]\n\");
// Show string equality operators
string str1 = \"foo\";
string str2 = \"bar\";
string str3 = \"bar\";
Console.WriteLine(\"{0} == {1} ? {2}\", str1, str2, str1 == str2 );
Console.WriteLine(\"{0} == {1} ? {2}\", str2, str3, str2 == str3 );
}
}
Output:
Null Object is []
Real Object is [StringTest]
i is [10]
foo == bar ? False
bar == bar ? True
8)How do you specify a custom attribute for the entire assembly (rather than for a class)?
Global attributes must appear after any top-level using clauses and before the first type or namespace declarations. An example of this is as follows:
using System;
[assembly : MyAttributeClass] class X {}
Note that in an IDE-created project, by convention, these attributes are placed in AssemblyInfo.cs.

Dear Mr Brown,
Re. Interview on 7 January, 2008
It was a great pleasure to meet you last week to discuss the future needs of your department.
Your planned expansion of the department sounds like a real challenge, plus you mention that you were thinking of introducing new systems. During my time at Dairy Foods Limited, I implemented a number of similar systems to those that you are considering. I was responsible for specifying the systems, selecting suppliers, and overseeing installations and the training of company employees.
This experience in the introduction of new systems would tie in well with your specific needs. I would be very interested in the new role that you are creating and will call you next week to discuss the possibility of coming for a second interview as we discussed.
Yours sincerely,
Srikanth Reddy

Frequently Asked Questions In C (Pointers Topic)
Frequently Asked Questions In C (Pointers Topic)
1)What are pointers really good for, anyway?
2)I'm trying to declare a pointer and allocate some space for it, but it's not working. What's wrong with this code?
char *p;
*p = malloc(10);
3)Does *p++ increment p, or what it points to?
4)I'm trying to use pointers to manipulate an array of ints. What's wrong with this code?
int array[5], i, *ip;
for(i = 0; i < 5; i++) array[i] = i;
ip = array;
printf("%d\n", *(ip + 3 * sizeof(int)));
I expected the last line to print 3, but it printed garbage.
5)I have a char * pointer that happens to point to some ints, and I want to step it over them. Why doesn't
((int *)p)++;
work?
6)Why can't I perform arithmetic on a void * pointer?
7)I've got some code that's trying to unpack external structures, but it's crashing with a message about an ``unaligned access.'' What does this mean?
8)I have a function which accepts, and is supposed to initialize, a pointer:
void f(int *ip)
{
static int dummy = 5;
ip = &dummy;
}
But when I call it like this:
int *ip;
f(ip);
the pointer in the caller remains unchanged.
9)Suppose I want to write a function that takes a generic pointer as an argument and I want to simulate passing it by reference. Can I give the formal parameter type void **, and do something like this?
void f(void **);
double *dp;
f((void **)&dp);
10)I have a function
extern int f(int *);
which accepts a pointer to an int. How can I pass a constant by reference? A call like
f(&5);
doesn't seem to work.
11)Does C even have ``pass by reference''?
12)I've seen different syntax used for calling functions via pointers. What's the story?
13)What's the total generic pointer type? My compiler complained when I tried to stuff function pointers into a void *.
14)How are integers converted to and from pointers? Can I temporarily stuff an integer into a pointer, or vice versa?
15)How do I convert an int to a char *? I tried a cast, but it's not working.
16)What's wrong with this declaration?
char* p1, p2;
I get errors when I try to use p2.
17)What are ``near'' and ``far'' pointers?

Telephone Interviews
Telephone Interviews
Telephone interviews are becoming a more and more common way to eliminate people in the early stages of recruitment
1. Someone from the company will contact you and organise a time.
2. Find a quiet place to have the interview where you won't be interrupted or distracted
3. Use a landline where possible, the last thing you need is for your mobile phone to run out of battery power, or lose service!
4. Prepare for the interview as you would for a face-to-face interview
5. Limit yourself to a few written notes.
Don't be tempted to lay-out all the company information and prepared questions in front of you. You wouldn't be able to do this in a face-to-face interview so don't do it over the phone. You could end up searching for information so much that you don't answer a question or your answers could sound like you are reading them, which won't impress an interviewer.
